An Introduction to Medical Billing and Coding Careers

Medical billing and coding is often considered to be a single subject or a single career, but this isn't the case. While both fall under the umbrella of medical front-office jobs they actually require different skill sets. As a result, you may encounter educational programs that specialize in one career or the other, or in some cases, a combination of the two. In addition, some Medical Assisting programs will touch on elements of both billing and coding in their curriculum.

Medical coding is a surprisingly complicated procedure. It requires broad medical knowledge that encompasses various forms of treatment, diseases and thousands of different medical codes. A medical insurance coder is responsible for applying codes to different treatments, symptoms, medications and other medical factors. Insurance companies use these codes in their investigations and the payment of any associated costs. Mistakes can be costly so attention to detail as well as extensive knowledge is required.

The job of the medical billing specialist is also an important one. When a person receives any treatment, the physician, clinic or hospital responsible needs to get paid. The medical biller collects the relevant information, produces a bill and forwards it to the appropriate person or organization. They are also responsible for maintaining billing records and following up on any queries.

Employment and Earnings Statistics

Currently, medical billing and coding is one of the areas with the highest increase in job opportunities. The increase in people requiring medical treatment has led to an increase in the number of claims and invoices to be processed; as a result, more billing specialists must be hired. As such there are currently many openings for both professions. Professionals with the highest level of training from a medical billing and coding school will have the greatest opportunity in and around the Florida region.

The average salary for a medical coder is around $30,000 per year. The more qualifications you have the higher this salary is likely to be. The average annual salary for a medical billing specialist, on the other hand is $25,000. Many billing professionals choose to start their own medical billing practice after they have gained several years of experience as a salaried employee.

The Future Outlook for Medical Billing and Coding Professionals

Healthcare organizations are one of the largest employers of coders and billers in the country. The need for medical attention is increasing and consequently physicians and hospitals are realizing the need for a greater number of skilled front-office staff. Coding and billing will, in particular, be highly sought-after areas for medical professionals.

Many clinics and healthcare organizations are suffering from slow billing methods. As a result, these organizations will be on the look out for talented, efficient professionals. A high level of education or experience will be in high demand for the best jobs.

The Best Course of Education

There is absolutely no substitution for education when it comes to medical coding. Specialized medical coding courses have been developed to meet the unique requirements of the profession. Many medical billing and coding schools in Florida offer these programs and are recommended for individuals trying to enter the field.

Medical billing is slightly less specialized but earning a diploma or Associate's Degree in the field is highly advised for competitive positions.

Medical Billing and Coding Program Details

Florida medical billing and coding schools offer a wide variety of programs. In addition to specialized medical and billing diplomas and degrees, it is possible to enroll in a course in medical assisting or medical administrative assisting.

Those heading for a career in insurance coding will need to learn various aspects of anatomy, physiology, medical conditions, symptoms and treatments. A student will also be required to study the thousands of different codes that will be used on a regular basis.

Medical billers are advised to gain an understanding of some aspects of the medical profession in order to ensure the quickest and smoothest payment possible. Obviously, a solid educational background in billing procedures, software and other factors is also a must. There are several schools in Florida that offer all of the necessary medical billing training.
